Detail

  • Zack Britton, LHP

Age34 (35 on Dec. 22, 2022).

Status: Free agent.

2022 salary: $14M.

2022 stats: 0-0, 13.50 ERA, 3 games, 0.2 IP, 1 hit, 1 run, 1 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 1 K.

The skinny: Britton returned from Tommy John surgery in September 2021 in less than a year, but he only lasted eight days and two batters into his third appearance before being shut down for the season due to shoulder fatigue. What is Britton’s next step? He’ll most likely have to settle for a one-year deal with low guaranteed money and big performance bonuses for staying healthy and playing a lot of games. He’s been hurt in the last two years, and he’s getting older, so there’s a risk. It wouldn’t be surprising if Britton signs with a team that will give him a chance to close because he was as good as anyone in that role for Baltimore from 2014 to 2017.

Prediction: Re-signs with Yankees.

  • Matt Carpenter, INF/OF

Age: 36 (37 on Nov. 26, 2022).

Status: Free agent.

2022 salary: $2M.

2022 stats: 305 average, 128 AB, 28 runs, 39 hits, 9 doubles, 15 HR, 37 RBI, 19 BB, 35 K, 1.138 OPS, 47 games.

The skinny: The Yankees would like to keep Carpenter, but his asking price may be too high. Someone will probably want him as a starter and offer him a multi-year contract worth far more than the $2 million he made this year.

Prediction: Signs with St. Louis Cardinals.

Age: 27 (28 on Dec. 24, 2022).

Status: Free agent.

2022 salary: $2.62M

2022 stats: 5-0, 4.03 ERA, 34 games, 29 IP, 27 hits, 16 runs, 13 ER, 2 HR, 15 BB, 31 K.

The skinny: Castro’s return appears feasible, depending on the money and term. He throws in the high 90s, and the Yankees appreciate having some high-velocity arms in their bullpen.

Prediction: Re-signs with Yankees.

  • Anthony Rizzo, 1B

Age: 33 (34 on Aug. 8, 2023).

Status: $16M contract for 2023. Can opt out after 2022 season.

2022 salary: $16M.

2022 stats: .224 average, 465 AB, 77 runs, 104 hits, 21 doubles, 1 triple, 32 HR, 75 RBI, 6 SB, 58 BB, 101 K, .817 OPS, 130 games.

The skinny: This is also an intriguing situation. Rizzo has until five days after the World Series to opt out and try for a new multi-year contract with a higher average salary, which he is likely to do. A two-year deal with a club option for a third year appears feasible, even though Rizzo is a risk due to his on-and-off back issues, which have resulted in three missed games this season.

Prediction: Re-signs with Yankees.

  • Luis Severino, RHP

Age: 28 (29 on Feb. 20, 2023).

Status: $15M club option or $2.75M buyout for 2023.

2022 salary: $11M.

2022 stats: 7-3, 3.18 ERA, 19 starts, 102 IP, 72 hits, 37 runs, 36 ER, 14 HR, 30 BB, 112 K.

The skinny: Due to a slew of injuries, including a Tommy John surgery, the Yankees only received 120 innings for the $37.25 million they paid Severino from 2019 to 22. His career 5.15 postseason ERA is also a cause for concern.

Prediction: Yankees pick up club option.

  • Jameson Taillon, RHP

Age: 30 (31 on Nov. 18, 2022).

Status: Free agent.

2022 salary: $5.8M.

2022 stats: 14-5, 3.91 ERA, 32 starts, 177.1 IP, 168 hits, 78 runs, 77 ER, 26 HR, 32 BB, 151 K.

The skinny: Taillon led the Yankees in wins this season and avoided the injured list for the second time in his career. Will that be enough to entice the Yankees to sign him to a long-term contract?

Prediction: Signs with Los Angeles Angels.

  • Andrew Benintendi, LF

Age: 28 (29 on July 6, 2023).

Status: Free agent.

2022 salary: $8.5M.

2022 stats: .304 average, 461 AB, 54 runs, 140 hits, 23 doubles, 3 triples, 5 HR, 51 RBI, 8 SB, 52 BB, 77 K, .766 OPS, 126 games.

The skinny: He’s a complete player in his early twenties, so a long-term contract with good pay is on the way. If Judge leaves, the Yankees will have a starting outfield spot open, which Benintendi could fill.

Prediction: Re-signs with Yankees.

  • Aroldis Chapman, LHP

Age: 34 (35 on Feb. 28, 2023).

Status: Free agent.

2022 salary: $18M.

2022 stats: 4-4, 4.46 ERA, 9 saves, 43 games, 36.1 IP, 24 hits, 18 runs, 18 ER, 4 HR, 28 BB, 43 K.

The skinny: Chapman has no chance of returning, and that was true even before he walked away from the Yankees by skipping the mandatory ALDS workout because he didn’t get insurance that he’d be on their playoff roster.

Prediction: Signs with Miami Marlins.

  • Marwin Gonzalez, UTL

Age: 33 (34 on March 14, 2023).

Status: Free agent.

2022 salary: $1.15M.

2022 stats: .185 average, 184 AB, 20 runs, 34 hits, 7 doubles, 6 HR, 18 RBI, 3 SB, 14 BB, 54 K, .576 OPS, 85 games.

The skinny: Gonzalez is also definitely out. He helped the Yankees in the first half of the season because he could play corner outfield, shortstop, first base, and third base. However, the Yankees will find a better and less expensive utility player for 2023, possibly Oswaldo Cabrera.

Prediction: Signs minor-league contract with Baltimore Orioles.

  • Chad Green, RHP

Age: 31 (32 on May 24, 2023).

Status: Free agent.

2022 salary: $4M

2022 stats: 1-1, 3.00 ERA, 14 games, 15 IP, 13 hits, 6 runs, 5 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 16 K.

The skinny: Green was having a fairly consistent season until he blew out his elbow in early June. This resulted in season-ending Tommy John surgery and a missed opportunity to sign a good free agent contract. Instead, he could settle for a two-year deal with a team that will basically pay to rehab him for one season and then give him a late-inning bullpen arm in 2024.

Prediction: Signs with Tampa Bay Rays.

  • Aaron Judge, RF

Age: 30 (31 on April 26, 2023).

Status: Free agent.

2022 salary: $19M.

2022 status: .311 average, 570 AB, 133 runs, 177 hits, 28 doubles, 62 HR, 131 RBI, 16 SB, 111 BB, 175 K, 1.111 OPS, 157 games.

The skinny: This is the important one. Judge is wanted by the Yankees. They desperately need him. But does Judge want to return or stay at home and play for the San Francisco Giants? According to a source, San Francisco will go all out for Judge. Judge was booed during two home playoff games at Yankee Stadium, Game 2 of the ALDS and Game 3 of the ALCS.

Prediction: Signs with San Francisco Giants.
