According to Ian Rapoport, Akers and McVay reportedly disagree on philosophical and football-related issues, which is why Akers missed practice on Thursday and Friday and was inactive on Sunday against the Panthers.

Akers was selected by the Rams in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and after recovering from a torn Achilles in time for the playoffs, he helped them win a Super Bowl the previous season.

After serving as Darrell Henderson Jr.’s backup in Week 1, he has since underperformed and lost favor in the backfield.

Akers could still play for the Rams if no agreement can be reached, according to McVay.

Akers is still valuable as a young running back, but after ripping his Achilles, he doesn’t seem like the same player. Given the seriousness of the injury, this is not entirely unexpected.

Henderson and Malcolm Brown will now take the majority of carries since Akers is leaving.
