Coach Tyronn Lue stated during pre-game media duties before an important win over the Rockets that while Leonard is “getting better,” the stiffness in his knee means he shouldn’t return just yet.
This raised more concerns about the two-time champion’s recovery, as his streak of not touching the floor will now last at least six games to begin the season.
The concerns stem from the fact that the team has not placed a timetable on the latest injury setback, instead operating on a game-by-game basis, similar to how Lue was asked weekly at what point in the Clippers’ failed playoff run Leonard would return for.
As a result, fans eagerly awaiting Kawhi’s return to the court may feel as if they are in an all too familiar situation.
However, it is clear that patience and perspective are required. Kawhi has a troubled history with health, having reportedly asked to be traded from the Spurs due to dissatisfaction from the franchise and his former teammates with his handling of the situation.
The Clippers don’t want to repeat that scenario, so they’ll do whatever it takes to make their starting point guard as comfortable as possible.
